In 1923, Hawthorne K. Dent wanted to create a different type of insurance company. Dent founded General Insurance Company of America in Seattle, Washington. After 30 years of earning praise for excellent services and competitive rates, Dent founded the Selective Auto and Fire Insurance Company of America, as a subsidiary of General Insurance Company. SAFECO sold many products including auto insurance, fire insurance, life insurance as well as mutual funds and commercial lines of insurance. Throughout the 50s and 60s, both insurance companies thrived and Dent decided to merge the companies together forming Safeco Corporation.  For the next 50 years, Safeco expanded their reach in the country, offering insurance products from coast-to-coast. In the early 2000s, Safeco decided to return to its roots and decided to focus on selling certain insurance products in Kirkland, WA:
